[added comments] The above appears to be an overly simple definition of climate change and the last sentence is open to extensive discussion.  There is much more to climate change than temperature.  There is wind, precipitation, humidity, atmospheric pressure, and other elements.  Also, there is nothing unusual about climate change, because the climate is constantly changing.  Climate is simply average weather.  What that is depends on the averaging period.  Some say that at least 30 years of measurements are required to compute climatic averages, but that is not necessarily correct.  There are good reasons to consider 60 years of measurements due to the 60-year Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO).  The limiting factor in computing climatological averages is the amount of measurement data available.  Generally, there is no more than 100 to 150 years of data unless proxy data are used.  Regardless, the climatological average will be different for each different averaging period.  Consequently, we must conclude that we really do not have sufficient data to know what the climatological averages are not to mention how they are changing.

“Satellite snafu masked true sea-level rise for decades”
“Revised tallies confirm that the rate of sea-level rise is accelerating as the Earth warms and ice sheets thaw.”

When I read that, I (like everyone else) assumed that corrections to the satellite sea level data since 1993 have now led to a revised trend toward faster (not slower) sea level rise. Right? Continue reading “Study: Sea Level Rise Revised Downward”

Audubon Goes over the Edge (Jan/Feb 2016 issue) promotes anti-science alarmism)

“Audubon’s equivocal policy on wind power ostensibly calls on wind energy developers to consider planning, siting, and operating wind farms in a manner that avoids bird carnage and supports ‘strong enforcement’ of laws protecting birds and wildlife. On the other hand, the same Audubon policy speaks about ‘species extinctions and other catastrophic effects of climate change’ and ‘pollution from fossil fuels’.”

The cover of the January-February 2016 issue of Audubon Magazine  proclaims: Arctic on the Edge: As global warming opens our most critical bird habitat, the world is closing in. In reality, it is the magazine’s writers and editors who have gone over the edge with their misleading reports on the Arctic.

Those words, spoken whimsically about cosmology, apply to climate science as well. The theory of the sensitivity of climate to the radiative SFCTforcing imposed by a doubling of carbon dioxide suffers from a lack of observed, repeatable examples. Paleo-climate studies carry with them the uncertainty of the proxy data and unmeasured assumptions on which they are based. Studies regarding the forcing from volcanoes and other transient events may not be repeatable for some time. However, Lindzen et. al. 1995 (link ) and Ramanathan and Inamdar in Frontiers of Climate Modeling, 2006 (link ) each have pointed out that the seasonal variation of earth temperature is quite large and possibly a surrogate for climate change.
