A Year Later: Alarmism, and Claims the Pacific Northwest’s Heat Wave was Human-Caused

In late June 2021 a well-publicized heat wave occurred in the Pacific Northwest states of the USA.  I write this review a year later with a full year having passed for retrospection to examine what happened, in hopes that we might learn some lessons.

One NPR story captured a headline and narrative that puts many elements of Global Warming Alarmism up for critical examination.  The headline,

Facebook Censorship of CASF

 [So, it appears as if the Facebook part of Big Tech is dredging newspapers’ opinion pages, looking for people who criticize the polemic of human-caused CO2-fueled global warming catastrophe.]

A conversation with John Christy, for Association des climato-réalistes

John Raymond Christy is a climate scientist at the University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) whose chief interests are satellite remote sensing of global climate and global climate change.  In February 2019 he was named as a member of the EPA Science Advisory Board.

In May 2019 he was interviewed by Grégoire Canlorbe for Association des climato-réalistes, the only climate-realist association in France.  The conversation was first published in the French journal Valeurs Actuelles (in a French edited version), and on Friends of Science (in the original English version).

Grégoire Canlorbe: You have been at pains to show that climate models are over-predicting warming by roughly a factor of two. Could you come back to this alleged falsification?

John Christy: We should be applying the scientific method to claims scientists (and others) are making about the climate. In this case I downloaded the output from 102 climate model simulations used by the IPCC and compared the tropospheric temperature since 1979 between the models and several observational datasets, including the satellite dataset we generate. Weather, not human-caused CO2-fueled global warming, is responsible for 2017’s damaging wildfire history in California

The year 2017 featured incredibly intense, damaging wildfires in California. First the Wine Country fires of October, and later, in December, the massive Thomas Fire, each destroyed hundreds of homes.  The latter, in many of the affluent suburbs and enclaves northwest of Los Angeles and Hollywood.  The Thomas Fire is the largest in modern California history with over 1000 structures destroyed.

California’s Governor Jerry Brown blamed human-caused CO2-fueled

global warming for this conflagration during a visit to Ventura County on 9 December, saying the drought conditions were the “new normal.” To quote the governor, “There have (historically) been very long droughts in California and we are getting some of those returning very bad, and we’re going to get them returning more often.”

 

But, Governor Brown is just wrong about this, as an examination of some meteorological and climate data shows:
